2016 I-DAY CUP-DAY 3: SHILLONG & AIZAWL REGISTER WINS


Shillong Lajong started their campaign in Independence Day Cup with a 2-1 win against Bethlehem Vengthalang FC, where as Aizawl FC defeat AIFF U19 by 2-1.

Lajong Head Coach, Singto selected a strong line up today consisting of the Lajong youngsters namely, Nim Dorjee, Sandeep Singh, Pritam Kumar, Joe, Jacob, Joseph, Redeem Tlang, Bipin Singh, Milan Basumatary, Samuel Lalmuanpuia and Phurba (GK). 

Lajong started the match on a bright note and saw plenty of opportunities coming in front of goal. The boys displayed a brilliant game and were combining exceptionally well.

A howler by BVT's goalkeeper in the 24th minute cost his team dear when he failed to clear a long ball on the edge of the box. Lajong's 21 year old midfielder, Bipin Singh was quick to react and sent the ball into the nets with his left foot.

Lajong were reduced to 10 men when their Goal keeper, Phurba was shown a red card for handling the ball outside the box. This led to the coach to make a forced substitution, bringing in Nethovile in place of Redeem Tlang.

Lajong doubled their lead at the hour mark when Milan Basumataray intercepted a long ball on the left flank and dribbled it into the box. He out maneuvered the lone defender between him and the goal and lodged the ball into the nets.

Bethlehem Vengthalang managed to reduce Lajong's lead in the 85th minute when Rinsanga blocked a shot by Lajong's goalkeeper inside the box which ricocheted into the nets.

The match ended with a score line of 2-1 in favour of Shillong Lajong. This loss means that Bethlehem Vengthalang are at the bottom of the Group B points table with two losses in as many games.


In the second match of the day, Aizawl FC registered their first win of the tournament as they defeated AIFF U19 by 2-0.

Aizawl FC's Ghanaian striker, Bright Mends opened the scoring for his team in the 38th minute with Left back,Ricky doubling the lead just before half time.

This win earns Aizawl FC three vital points and places them at the top of the Group A table where they are tied with Chanmari FC who have the same points and have played one game less.
