Defending Champions, Atletico de Kolkata started their campaign in the 2nd Season of Hero ISL with an away win against Chennaiyin FC at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai. The match attended by the likes of Rajnikanth, Amitabh Bachchan, Mukesh Ambani was marred by a poor pitch and slow pace.

Chennaiyin FC started without Mendoza and Bruno Pellisari, which raised quite a few eyebrows and also their Caoch, Marco Matterazi was absent from the touch line, serving a one match ban carried from Last Year's semi final clash against FC Goa at home.

Atletico de Kolkata opened their account in the 13th minute when Chennaiyin FC Goal Keeper Apoula Edel attempt to collect a Borja Fernandez free kick failed as he collided with his Brazilian team mate Mailson and spilled the ball only to find Helder Postiga, finish in style to score the first goal of this season Hero ISL.

Chennaiyin FC poured in forward with some good game play and mounted many attacks on ATK's goal. Fikru had a good chance to level the score in the 21st minute when he single handedly tried to breach the opposition's defence but could not finish.

In the 29th minute, Elano sent a cross to Fikru from the right wing who found himself too close to the opposition goalkeeper. But Amrinder Singh was unable to collect the ball and spilled it in the path of Indian International, Jeje Lalpekhlua, who leveled the score for Chennaiyin FC and thus became the first Indian to score in this season.

Bernard Mendy was introduced in the second half  but a horrible mistake by him in the 70th minute gave ATK the lead. His attempt to head back the ball to goal keeper was intercepted by Helder Postiga, who finished in style to score his second goal and give his team the lead over their rival. But in the process, he injured himself and had to be carried out on a stretcher.

Valdo, who came in place of Postiga, sealed the deal for Kolkata in the 76th minute when he scored off a cross from Iain Hume. Mendy, who was having a horrible day at work gave away a penalty three minutes later when he handled the ball inside his team's box. Javi Lara, who took the spot kick was unable to score from it as, Apoula Edel , Chennaiyin FC Goalkeeper, judged the kick to perfection and saved a goal for his team.

In the 89th minute, the refree awarded a penalty to Chennaiyin FC, when he wrongly called a hand ball on Arnab Mondal, when the ball actually hit his knee. Elano, who took the kick for his team made no mistake and reduced the margin for his team.

CFC did try to level the score in the dying minutes of the game but Atletico's defence denied them any chance and the game ended with a scoreline of 3-2 in the favour of the visitors.
