KERALA BLASTERS SIGN AARON HUGHES AS MARQUEE PLAYER

The Kochi based club has announced the signing of the Northern Irish defender for the upcoming Indian Super League. Hughes was part of the Northern Ireland Squad that participated in recently concluded Euro Cup.

Hughes plays mainly at centre back, but can also be used at right back or left back, as well as anywhere in midfield. He came through ranks at Newcastle United and made his debut at the age of 18 against FC Barcelona on 26 November 1997 in an UEFA Champions League game. His association with the Magpies continued for eight seasons during which he made 278 appearances. He later joined Aston Villa where he spent the next two years of his playing career.

This was followed by a 7-year stint with Fulham and brief stints with Championship sides, Queen Park Rangers and Bright & Hove Albion and A-League side, Melbourne City.

Hughes made his international debut at the age of 19 against Slovakia on 25 March 1998 and has since earned 103 caps for Northern Ireland. He captained the side regularly from 2003 until his retirement in 2011.

On the Marquee signing, KBFC Head Coach, Steve Coppell said, "Aaron Hughes' as a marquee player bringing a wealth of experience, he will also mentor the players. I am looking forward to working with him."
